Why decorating is the most underrated home improvement

Here's an odd fact about how people value their homes. After a fresh coat of paint, a house feels bigger, brighter and newer, even though not a single square metre has changed. Estate agents know this, which is why the photographs are always taken after the decorators leave.

Moving house in Derby means fees, stamp duty and removal vans, and you lose a week to cardboard boxes. Redecorating the house you already own takes days rather than months, and leaves you with the same neighbours, the same school run and a home that suddenly feels like somewhere new.

That's what a Mickleover painter and decorator really sells. Not paint, but the feeling of having moved, without the moving.

We decorate homes across Mickleover (DE3), from the old village streets to the newer estates and The Pastures, and in nearby Littleover, Mackworth, Radbourne, Findern, Etwall and Burnaston.

Local decorators in Mickleover

People will travel miles for a restaurant and resent travelling ten minutes for a tradesperson. That's not irrational. Local decorators are easier to reach, quicker to visit, and, crucially, they have to live with their reputation at the school gate.

  • A short drive, so a quick visit. Measuring up rarely needs a week's wait.
  • Knowing the housing. Mickleover's interwar semis, post-war homes and newer estates each have their own habits (and their own predictable cracks).
  • Less dead time. We don't spend half the day in traffic on the A38, so more of the day goes on your walls.

There's also a subtler benefit. A tradesperson who's nearby is more likely to come back for the small things, like the touch-up after the new sofa arrives, or the door you forgot to mention.

Residential painter in Mickleover

There is one detail people judge a decorator by, and it isn't the paint. It's the edges.

Ask anyone what makes a professionally decorated room look professional and they'll struggle to put it into words. Show them a room with a slightly wobbly line where the wall meets the ceiling, though, and they'll notice instantly. The brain is extraordinarily good at spotting imperfect edges. So that's where a residential painter earns their keep.

  • Hallways, stairs and landings. Highest traffic, most scuffs, biggest impact.
  • Living rooms and bedrooms. Colour changes, fresh neutrals and accent walls.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms, in moisture- and grease-resistant paints.
  • Ceilings, in flat matt to hide the imperfections every ceiling has.
  • Woodwork, in durable water-based satin that stays white.

And the unglamorous bits that matter: furniture moved and covered, floors sheeted, filling and sanding, stain sealing, two full coats, tidy every evening.

Exterior wall painting in Mickleover

Most people judge a house in about the time it takes to walk past it. Faded render, green streaks under the windowsills and flaking pebble-dash all send the same unconscious message: this house is tired. Clean, fresh masonry sends the opposite one, and it changes how a house feels to come home to, and how buyers react if you ever sell.

Exterior wall painting is maintenance too. Good masonry paint helps shed rain and slows the weathering of render and brickwork.

Walls we paint: smooth render, pebble-dash and spar-dash, painted brickwork, garden and boundary walls, garages and outbuildings.

  1. Wash down and treat algae and mould with a fungicidal wash
  2. Scrape and repair loose or flaking areas, and fill cracks
  3. Stabilise chalky or powdery surfaces with a stabilising primer
  4. Paint with exterior masonry paint, smooth or textured, two coats
  5. Finish sills, fascias and woodwork to match, if required

We work in dry, settled weather. Masonry paint applied to a damp wall doesn't last, and a good-looking exterior that fails in a year isn't a bargain.

Glossing and wallpapering in Mickleover

These two belong together. Wallpapering gives a room its personality; glossing (doors, frames, skirtings and spindles) gives it its finish. Do one without the other and the room feels half-done, rather like a new suit with old shoes.

Glossing

Glossing is the woodwork part of decorating, and it's where shortcuts show most.

  • Sand and degrease (old gloss is slippery; new paint won't stick to it)
  • Fill dents and gaps, and caulk the joint between skirting and wall
  • Undercoat for coverage
  • Top coat: gloss (traditional shine), satinwood (modern, softer) or eggshell (subtle)

Water-based by default: fast drying, less smell, and no yellowing in the way old oil-based gloss does.

Wallpapering

  • Strip old paper and wash off paste residue
  • Fill and line walls where needed
  • Plan the pattern: centred on the focal wall, joins matched
  • Hang standard, designer, paste-the-wall and feature papers

A small behavioural tip: if you can't decide between two papers, put both samples on the wall and leave them for a week. The one you stop noticing is the wrong one.

Decorating in Mickleover

Mickleover used to be a village outside Derby. Then Derby caught up with it. The result is a place with two personalities: an older core of brick houses, a church and pubs around the old village centre, and, spreading outwards, decades of family homes, from interwar and post-war semis to modern estates. The former Pastures Hospital buildings have become homes, and the Great Northern Greenway runs along the old railway line.

  • Interwar and post-war semis: picture rails, coving, hallways with a lot of woodwork
  • Newer estates: large plain walls, perfect for a colour change, and new-build cracks in year one or two
  • Converted buildings: high ceilings and tall windows
  • Render and pebble-dash across many front elevations

Also covering Littleover, Mackworth, Radbourne, Findern, Etwall and Burnaston.

How much does a painter and decorator cost in Mickleover?

A curious thing about pricing: people feel better about a number when they understand it. So instead of a price list (which would be wrong for most houses anyway), here's the reasoning behind every quote we write.

Most of what you pay for is time, and most of the time is preparation. That's why two rooms of the same size can be quoted very differently.

What adds days: stripping wallpaper, cracked or patched walls, lots of woodwork to gloss, dark-to-light colour changes, exterior walls needing towers or scaffolding.
What saves days: booking several rooms at once (one set-up, not five), and walls in decent condition.

You'll get a written, fixed quote after a quick visit, made for your house.

Mickleover questions, answered

Can pebble-dash be painted?

Yes. It needs cleaning, repairs and a masonry paint worked generously into the texture, usually by brush and roller, sometimes by spray.

Gloss, satin or eggshell for doors and skirting?

Satinwood is the most popular now: durable, easy to clean, softer than gloss. Gloss suits a traditional look; eggshell is the most subtle.

How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house?

It depends on size, wall type and access, so every exterior is quoted individually after we've seen it, with any access equipment shown clearly.

How long does it take to wallpaper a room?

A feature wall is usually a day. A whole room, including stripping and lining, is often two to three days.

Why do cracks appear in new-build walls?

New homes settle and their timbers dry out, so hairline cracks in the first couple of years are normal. We fill them before painting.

Do you cover Littleover and Etwall?

Yes, along with Mackworth, Radbourne, Findern and Burnaston.

How quickly do you reply?

We aim to respond to every enquiry within the day. Exterior work in spring and summer books up sooner, so it's worth getting in touch early.
